Early Life

Robert Ralph Minkoff was born to a Jewish family in Palo Alto, California on 11th August, 1962 to Jack Robert Minkoff and Tola Fay Minkoff. Minkoff has been charmed with cartoons and animation since he was a child.

He attended Palo Alto High School and graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in the Character Animation program in the early 1980s. Later Minkoff met Chuck Jones while in school and regarded him as an inspiration.

Career

Minkoff began his career with Walt Disney in 1983. He worked on The Black Cauldron, his first animated film. As a supervising animator, he worked on a mystery adventure animated film.

He was then chosen as a character designer in the animated film The Brave Little Toaster. Minkoff’s efforts were rewarded in 1989 with the release of another film, The Little Mermaid. In 1990, he went on to direct another film called Beauty and the Beast which was a big success.

Minkoff received a great break in 1994 after directing the popular film The Lion King. Stuart Little followed a few years later. Stuart Little 2, the sequel to the film, was released in 2002.

Minkoff was then hired to direct Eddie Murphy’s The Haunted Mansion in 2003. Soon after, he was cast as the director of a live-action Jetsons picture as well as a remake of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Minkoff established his own production company, Sprocketdyne Entertainment, sometime in the 2000s. He was working with Sony Pictures on a live-action/CGI feature film called Mr. Peabody & Sherman in 2003. DreamWorks Animation stated in 2011 that it will produce the concept as a computer-animated film, which was eventually released in 2014.

However, Minkoff proposed an all-animal cast, and he was attached as a producer in 2014. Following the death of original filmmaker Chris Bailey, the film was renamed Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank and was released in theaters in 2022.
